How to stay globally connected in an uncertain environment

In the midst of the uniquely global experience of COVID-19, businesses large and small are paying more attention to the ways they rely on global commerce to function. Whether you have a single overseas vendor or entire branches dedicated to global business, you’ve likely already experienced challenges communicating with departments, suppliers, manufacturers, employees, and more working in other countries. As uncertainty continues to surround large-scale economic reopening, yours and countless other companies are preparing for these challenges to continue.

The need for human interconnectivity and cultural awareness has never been more important. Regardless of the evolution of the pandemic, the world will continue to be comprised of people. People from all walks of life and areas of the globe. People who are both leading companies and purchasing goods and services from companies. People who want to be heard and understood, and who want their interactions with your company to be more than transactional – they want them to be relational.

My questions for you are…

  • Are you speaking to the multicultural masses in a way they’ll respond to – not just by speaking their language but also by understanding their culture?
  • Is your message to potential business partners, talent, and consumers across different countries and cultures being effectively received?
  • Do you understand the unique culture and intricacies of localization within your target markets?
  • Are your brand, products, and services being accurately represented and communicated to audiences in other countries?
  • When your company’s messages are adapted for diverse audiences, is the context translated, or only the content?
  • Are you prepared to quickly disseminate information in various languages as you inevitably have to adopt new procedures and policies?
  • Are you communicating in a way that connects with people from other cultures, and builds relationships instead of just transactions?

”AAA Translation allowed the St. Louis County Department of Public Health to communicate important health safety messages to all members of the community during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Being able to message directly to our non-English speaking neighbors not only provided a timely information flow, but allowed for the building of meaningful relationships with media and community partners. AAA Translation was a valued partner in assuring individuals from every background had the information necessary to make informed decisions about their family’s wellbeing.”

Cultural Significance

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

– Nelson Mandela

As the world contends with the implications of privilege, we’re reflecting on the class divide that language presents. Expecting your international—or even US national—audience to understand your message in your language can be considered an oppressive assertion. At AAA Translation, we strive for a world where information is cross-culturally accessible. We celebrate the linguistic diversity that highlights the vast diversity of the human experience itself.
